Narco-Terrorism: A Unified Strategy to Fight a Growing Terrorist Menace
Published in Paperback by Transnational Publishers (13 February, 2002)
Author: Douglas J. Davids
Average review score:

An Important and Timely Work
I found this to be a well written and thoroughly researched book. The author, an Army officer in the Pentagon's Counter-Drug program, presents an overview of narco-terrorism, discusses the relations between narcotics trafficking and terrorism, gives a history of various drug wars, and finally, presents a strategy for dealing with narco-terrorism.

I was especially impressed with the history of narcotics as a weapon. I'm sure most people are familiar with the Anglo-Chinese Opium Wars, but I was more intrigued by the use of drugs by the Japanese Army to destabilize the military and population of China during World War II. That the Chinese have seen the harmful effect of illegal drug use throughout their history may help explain their harsh penalties for its use now, as well as their interest in its use as a weapon in future conflicts.

Major Davids also discusses the use of drugs as a funding source for terrorist groups, and how many groups, including al Qaeda, have greatly benefitted from drug sales. One of the author's specific goals towards fighting the drug war is to make casual drug users aware of the relationship between drug money and terrorism. Part of this plan can be seen in the current PSAs on television stressing that link.

Although this book was published after 9/11, most of the groundwork was done well before that. (See the author's related article about the use of drugs as a weapon published in the Reserve Officers' Association magazine of July 2001.) The
author's plan for a unified strategy against drug use is the heart of the book. He presents it in four phases: education of the American public, extradition of drug lords, creation of a specialized force, and civic action to improve the lives of impoverished farmers who are often forced to grow drug crops.

I feel it is a timely and important work. It is well written; well researched but not dry. The author's plan makes a lot of sense; whether we as a nation have the will to implement it remains to be seen.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave
Published in Audio Cassette by Globe Fearon (January, 1999)
Authors: Frank Dagostino and Globe Fearon
Average review score:

Moving autobiogragphy...
This is a fantastic book! I enjoy the genre of autobiography and have read quite a few, and I have to say this is one of the best autobiographies I have ever read.

The overcoming of adversity, the indictment of slavery, the dispelling of the Gone-With-The-Wind myth and fantasy of slavery, the revealment of the horror and suffering, the hand-over-hand determination of self-respect and manhood, the thrilling escape to freedom -- the book is stunning. Yet, refreshingly, the book has none of the self-promoting egocentric attitude of some autobiographies, the book is just stunningly well and plainly written in content. Also of interest are the 2 prefaces.

I heard the audio book version of this, and it was well-spoken by the narrator.

Highly recommended.

Nature Walk
Published in Library Binding by Greenwillow (September, 1989)
Authors: Douglas Florain and Douglas Florian
Average review score:

Excellent nature book
Nature Walk is a very clever, well-put-together book suitable for school and at-home reading. The large-print text is simple and rhyming, which makes it good for the beginning reader. Used as a read-aloud lap book, it is good for preschoolers, and the short rhyme holds their attention. I would read it to toddlers, too--can you find the rabbit hidden on each page? At the back of the book is an illustrated list of plants and animals for readers to find, a good activity for parent and child to do together. The oil pastel illustrations are a good art role model for children, since the medium looks like the crayons that most children draw with. I teach a class on writing children's nature literature, and use this book, along with Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, to open my first session.

Neotropical Birds: Ecology and Conservation
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (April, 1996)
Authors: Douglas F. Stotz, Conservation International, John W. Fitzpatrick, Debra K. Moskovits, and Theodore A. Parker
Average review score:

Next book on tropical birds you buy after the field guides
Certainly tropical bird lovers, who have had the thrill of one or more bird trips to Central or South America, will want to begin to make more sense of their experiences. This book is for the birder about to turn tropical ecologist. It makes sense of the habitats, with terrific photos, many by John Fitzpatrick, of representative areas of the key habitats. The database tables in the back of the book, termed "essentially a download of Ted Parker's mind" are the essence of this information. For each of the 4000 species from the Rio Grande to Tierra Del Fuego, there are lists of habitats used by every species, and even a table of the indicator bird species for each region.
The books makes the really important point: you cannot prioritize saving the birds of the tropics only by species, one bird at a time. You have to look at what habitats are being irreversibly destroyed the most rapidly, and use those birds which depend most on these habitats - as info connections by which the habitats are to be recognized in the field, and then saved by appropriate political and economic action. Terrific book! Easy to read.

New International Bible Dictionary
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (19 January, 1999)
Authors: J. D. Douglas and Merrill C. Tenney
Average review score:

Excellent resource
Of course dictionaries aren't usually meant to be read through like novels. Even though I haven't done that with this book, I would if I had the time. This is a must have for any student of the Word of God. In addition to the definitions, the book also gives good insight on the topics, placing them in their historical context. Zondervan has done it again!
